Aloha kakou! Welcome to the Dog Touch Web site.

Why dog massage and why Dog Touch?:

Dogs have been an integral part of the world's societies for centuries and it appears that in today's world this trend is increasing.  People have dogs in their lives for various reasons including companionship, protection, work, and breeding.  In all these scenarios a great amount of time is devoted to the care of the animal.  Dog-Touch provides a service that enhances the quality of care for all dogs, through dog massage and other touch techniques.  The resulting affects of dog massage can have immediate as well as progressive affects on the animal's health and behavior.  Massage can also produce surprising results in the overall quality of the relationship between the animal and it's owner.

Dog-Touch services are devoted to the enhancement of the life experience of dogs and the relationships they have with their caretakers.  Being healthy and well balanced physically, mentally, and emotionally requires nutrition, exercise, and physical touch.  Dog-Touch provides the 'touch' part through application of massage therapy using basically the Swedish massage technique refined for a dogs anatomy.

I encourage pet owners to massage their animals.  I also show them some of the basic massage strokes and the areas to which they can apply these techniques if they so chose.   Dog massage is rewarding not only for the pet, but also for it's caretaker, as it promotes a happier, healthier, more functional dog, and residually creates a stronger bond and deeper understanding within the interrelationship.  The latter can be very healing for the pet owner.

There are many advantages of dog massage therapy, but for now, here is a short list of benefits for pet and owner that come from dog massage. I believe that someday pet massage will be as common place as human massage through the ever increasing collective human awareness of the mutual advantages resulting from animal massage therapy.

 Benefits of Dog massage:
  • Helps to calm or to invigorate (depending on the massage technique applied)
  • Promotes healing of muscles and other tissues
  • Promotes a better mental and emotional state
  • Enhances the conditions for homeostasis (balance in the body)
  • Induces beneficial affects to organs of the body
  • Improves circulation of blood and other body liquids
  • Instrumental in creating a closer bond between human and animal
  • Increases the communication and understanding between animal and human
  • Increases the mental and emotional 'focus' and 'centeredness' of the animal

  The Vet Rules:

Massage therapy should always be supportive of and does not replace the function of a veterinarian.  There are some instances when massage is not appropriate and occasions when massage should only be administered through doctor approval.  Depending on the severity and specific nature, some contraindications for massage are:
    - Some skin conditions (rash, lesions, sensitive skin, etc.)
    - Arthritis and dysplasia
    - Cancer
    - Diabetes
    - A vet should be consulted after any major surgery, especially cardiac related surgery.
